Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau has reportedly rejected Al Ahly's most recent financial proposal, casting uncertainty on his future with the Egyptian football club. Tau, under contract with Al Ahly until June 2025, has not been getting consistent playing opportunities this season with coach Marcel Koller, leading to rumours about his future plans.
Reports indicate that Al Ahly suggested a settlement of $300,000 (equivalent to around R5.4 million) for ending Tau's contract prematurely. This means the South African player could depart the club in the January 2025 transfer window and sign with another team without any transfer fees.
Nevertheless, Tau has rejected the proposal and is adamant about obtaining the entire $600,000 that he is owed according to his existing contract. Tau's situation took an unexpected turn when he declined Al Ahly's offer.
The club is said to be eager to address the issue promptly, particularly since Tau's minimal game time—only 11 minutes in the Egyptian Premier League this season—indicates he is not in Koller's plans. Even though he isn't getting enough playing time, Tau is staying strong and refusing to settle for anything less than his contractually agreed-upon rights.
The 29-year-old striker, who has had stints at Mamelodi Sundowns and Brighton & Hove Albion in the past, is still a prominent figure in African soccer. His choice to decline the lower settlement indicates that he is weighing his choices cautiously, possibly planning to join a different team based on his own terms rather than being pushed out early.
